Malaysian internet penetration statistics for Q3 2007

Earlier last week, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) published statistics on Malaysia’s internet penetration in their report, Communications and Multimedia; Selected Facts and Figures, 3rd Quarter, 2007 (link to announcement, link to PDF report).

I had a quick look through the report and have extracted the relevant sections regarding internet penetration below.

The total number of broadband subscriptions grew to 1,229,000 in Q3 2007, up from 760,200 subscriptions for the corresponding quarter in 2006. This means that total broadband penetration stands at 4.5%.

Breaking it down by technology, Wireless LAN subscribers represented the largest growth market, increasing by 182,700 subscriptions in a year to 257,600 subscriptions in Q3 2007. Wireless LAN now represent 21% of all broadband subscriptions in Q3 2007. ADSL still dominates as the leading broadband technology with 75.9% market share.

Meanwhile, the number of dial-up subscribers increased to 3,910,000 in Q3 2007, representing a 14.6% penetration rate. Together, this means that there are approximately 5,139,000 internet subscribers in Malaysia as of Q3 2007.

The increasing internet penetration in Malaysia means that marketers will be able to reach a wider audience and the Web is becoming a viable and significant medium for marketing communications. 2008 should be a great year for internet penetration too as the 3 WiMAX providers are about to start providing their services by mid-year.
